USAF - One

Every box has a story.

December 15, 2021

Hi, Judah, Levi:

I was in the United States Air Force for 30 years, from 1977 to 2007.

The USAF paid for my medical school training at the University of Southern California, 1973 - 1977.

I did my pediatric residency at Travis AFB, CA, 1977 - 1980.

I practiced medicine as a pediatrician for several years in the USAF, and then in 1983, or thereabouts, attended a short course in Flight Medicine and I practiced both pediatrics and flight medicine for the rest of my career, though flight medicine was what I enjoyed most, and for which I was most known while on active duty.

My first assignment as a flight surgeon was Bitburg Air Base, Germany, 1983 - 1986. The “wing” had three flying squadrons of F-15s, the premier fighter jet at the time. The F-15 was a single seater but each squadron of twenty planes had two two-seater F-15s for training, upgrade, currency requirements for pilots.

The back-seater was capable of flying the plane from the back seat but lacked much of the weapons systems found in the front.

In this box is my helmet, my flight suit, and a G-suit and a few other odds and ends.
